Collection: Alt- Azimuth Mounts

What are Alt- Azimuth Mounts?

Alt- Azimuth Mounts are types of telescope mounts that allow the observer to move the telescope in Altitude (up and down) and Azimuth (side-to-side) directions. They are the simplest and most common type of mounts used for amateur telescopes and are ideal for beginners who are just starting out in astronomy. Alt- Azimuth Mounts are also commonly referred to as AZ mounts or altaz mounts.

Alt- Azimuth Mounts are designed in such a way that the telescope is always in a horizontal position, which makes them easy to use and more stable than other mounts. This makes them ideal for observing objects either on the ground or in the sky. They have a vertical tilt that allows for easy alignment with objects in the sky and a horizontal swivel that allows for tracking of moving objects such as planets, stars, and satellites.

There are two types of Alt- Azimuth Mounts: manual and motorized. Manual Alt- Azimuth Mounts require the observer to adjust the telescope manually to track an object and keep it in view. Motorized Alt- Azimuth Mounts use motors that automatically track the object, making them more convenient for prolonged viewing sessions. They are also more expensive than manual mounts.
